About

Forty Acres Fresh Market opened its brick-and-mortar location in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood in September 2025. Liz Abunaw founded the company in 2017 after recognizing that Austin, a majority-Black community on Chicago’s West Side, lacked convenient access to fresh groceries. As a result, the store now stands as the only Black-owned full-service grocery store in the city. The name references the unfulfilled 1865 promise of “40 acres and a mule” made to formerly enslaved people, a history that shapes the market’s mission of building lasting food access. In addition to fresh produce and pantry staples, the market serves as a community gathering point for Austin residents. Meanwhile, its presence signals a broader push to bring full-service grocery options back to underserved Chicago neighborhoods.
