5 Baby Items Everyone Told Me Not to Buy (But I’m So Glad I Did)

Storm sleeping like a pro in the Snoo. This thing saved us more times than I can count.

When people find out you’re having a baby, the advice comes pouring in—whether you ask for it or not. Suddenly, everyone has a list of things you absolutely need… and a longer list of things you supposedly don’t.

But I knew what would make my life easier, so I trusted my gut. And honestly, I’m so glad I didn’t listen to everyone else. These five baby items were the most debated purchases, and they turned out to be some of the best decisions I made.

1. The Snoo Smart Sleeper Bassinet

This one caused the most drama. So many people told me not to bother. It’s expensive, the baby can only use it for a few months, and you need WiFi to use all the features. But I went with the rental option and it was worth every penny.

The Snoo is a smart bassinet that rocks your baby while playing white noise. If your baby stirs in the middle of the night, the Snoo responds by rocking more and adjusting the sound. It helped Storm (and me) get so much more sleep.

Yes, it’s an investment—but if sleep is something you value in those early months, it’s absolutely worth looking into.

2. The Owlet Dream Sock

My family thought this was ridiculous. They said it would just make me more anxious. But the truth is, I was already anxious. And this gave me peace of mind.

The Owlet tracks your baby’s heart rate, oxygen levels, and sleep patterns. You get live updates right on your phone, and it sends alerts if something’s off. For me, it was reassuring to have an extra layer of protection while Storm slept.

This little sock helped me sleep better—period.

3. Diaper Genie

I still don’t understand the hate. Everyone made it sound like a waste of money. But we’ve used ours every single day since Storm was born. He’s two now and it’s still going strong.

The Diaper Genie keeps the smell locked in. You do need to replace the filters (these ones are great: link) and yes, you’ll use special bags (these are cheap and work well). But that’s a small price to pay for not having a funky diaper smell in the house.

Don’t let anyone talk you out of this one.

4. Graco Simple Sway Baby Swing

This swing took up space in our apartment, but it was totally worth it. Storm loved it from day one, and it gave me moments of peace throughout the day.

As a work-from-home mom, this was a lifesaver. Whether I needed to take a call, clean up, or just eat something in peace, the swing had my back. I was actually sad when he got too big for it.

It wasn’t a want—it was a need.

5. Papablic Bottle Sterilizer and Dryer

Sure, you can boil bottles. But why?

This sterilizer saves time, energy, and stress. It fits up to 10 bottles at once and dries everything too. No waiting around for things to air dry on a towel. It’s quick, clean, and efficient.

This is one of those purchases that feels extra at first, but quickly becomes a part of your daily routine.

Final Thoughts

People will always have opinions, especially when it comes to parenting. But the truth is, only you know what makes your life easier.

These are the five items I’m so grateful I said yes to. They gave me peace of mind, more sleep, and little moments of sanity when I needed them most. If you’re building your registry or preparing for baby, don’t be afraid to do what works for you.
